1. What is aluminum alloy 5456 (UNS A95456)
An alloy in the wrought aluminum-magnesium series (5000 or 5xxx series) is 5456 (UNS A95456) aluminum alloy. It is a non-heat-treatable reinforced aluminum alloy with a 3-5% magnesium concentration. Compared to the 1 series and 3 series of aluminum alloys, this series of alloys has a low density and higher strength. It is a medium-to-high-strength aluminum alloy with excellent fatigue, welding, and corrosion resistance, as well as high elongation and a lovely surface after oxidation. It is closely related to the 5356 aluminum alloy, but unlike the majority of other aluminum-magnesium alloys, it is not utilized as a filler in forged alloys. Rolling, extrusion, and forging are the only methods of forming it; casting is not an option. Working in the cold reduces ductility while increasing strength. Exfoliation corrosion can occur with prolonged exposure to temperatures above 65 °C (150 °F). 5456 aluminum alloy is also known as UNS number A95456.
After quenching and cold work hardening, the aluminum alloy 5456 (UNS A95456) has good machinability, but it is poor when it is annealed. Since the corrosion resistance is low, procedures including anodizing, painting, and adding an aluminum layer to the surface are frequently employed to increase it. Aluminum plates are utilized in storage tanks, pressure vessels, armor plates, high-strength welded structures, and shipbuilding components.
